Koh Samui, 280 Km2, is the largest island of the Gulf of Siam. It is part of an archipelago of 80 smaller islands of which 6 only are inhabited. It is almost literally an island of coconuts and forested hills, on chalk mountains, culminating at 636 meters. Its beautiful beaches, its jungle, its hills and waterfall create a very changing landscape, rarely found in other islands. Samui is growing in popularity as a holiday destination for gays and lesbians who come from all over the world to dive, golf, shop, dine, party, splash in waterfalls, trek, ride elephants, drive from beach to beach or melt their cares away in exotic spas. The story of Samui started to change in the beginning of the 80's, when it was discovered by backpacker-travelers. These brought the creation of small simple bungalow resorts with palm leaves roofs, but the secret could not be kept for long and now the island is fast becoming a resort of international stature. Yet, in spite of the development of tourism, its inhabitants are well determined to preserve its natural charm and exceptional attraction. You will not find many buildings higher than a coconut palm. The beach is always close to your door. Samui's best beaches line the northern and eastern coasts, the most popular being Chaweng and Lamai where, generally, the most attractive and expensive accommodation is found.

Baan Rim Nam Guesthouse
"Live like a canal fisherman, with wi-fi and air-con. Perched on a wooden pier on Khlong Phrao, and backed by a mangrove, this renovated wooden fisherman's home affords the opportunity to experience a side of Ko Chang most visitors never see . . . . The guesthouse is often full so reservations are highly recommended." Lonely Planet Online Guide. Full review by Joe Cummings.
"Baan Rim Nam: A charming, idiosyncratic, converted fishing family's house, built on stilts over the klong at the end of a walkway through the mangroves. Run by a British-Thai couple, it has just three comfortable, stylishly-furnished air-con rooms with good bathrooms, plus a deck area for lounging but no restaurant. You can borrow kayaks and it's a couple of minutes walk to the beach and Barracuda Restaurant." The Rough Guide to Thailand, page 495
"This out-of-the-way guesthouse is set in one of the most gorgeous spots on the island." www.Travelfish.org

Help Us Save Thailand's Rainbow Heritage
Thailand is home to some of Asia’s, and the world’s, oldest and largest gay, lesbian, and transgender (GLT) communities. Since the 1970s, this country’s diverse GLT communities have produced a wide range of publications including periodicals and magazines, newsletters, information booklets, as well as advertising material and ephemera related to the many homosexual and kathoey-themed movies, TV programs, stage plays, songs, and popular culture events produced in recent decades. This large volume of Thai and English language materials is a treasure trove of information that documents the history of some of the world’s most important homosexual and transgender cultures.
While only produced in recent decades, these materials are in danger of being destroyed and disappearing completely in the next few years. Because of cultural sensitivities and anti-homosexual bias, established institutions have not considered these materials “worthy” of collection and preservation. Neither the National Library of Thailand nor any university or institutional archive, whether in Thailand or the West, has collected these materials. There is currently no public archive of Thai GLT publications and materials anywhere in the world.
