GAY SCENE
IN BANGKOK.
Bangkok, The City of Angels, Krung Thep - it
has a few names, Bangkok is a wild place and the heart of gay
Thailand, but more visitors lose their heart here than find
"true love", still it's fun exploring and while
money can't buy you love, it can buy you a close copy for a
short time - if that is what you are looking for! Gay
facilities in Bangkok include hotels/guest houses and
appartments, bars and pubs, discos, karaoke, cabaret,
restaurants, saunas, commercial bars (go-go and host bars),
and commercial sauna/massage places. The main concentration of
gay places in Bangkok is around the fashionable and trendy
Silom/Suriwong/Patpong area, with Silom Soi 2 being the main
focus for the dance crowd and Silom Soi 4 popular with the
more relaxed bar crowd. The commercial go-go bars are
concentrated in Patpong and Suriwong. Most of the gay go-go
bars feature sexy shows as well as go-go dancing. There are
some bars, commercial venues and saunas along Sukhumvit and in
other areas, and the Saphan Kwai area has many commercial
venues that are more popular with local Thais, but visitors
are always welcome. Most of the commercial bars in these areas
are lounge/host bars, often with karaoke, but some also have
go-go and even shows. These areas tend to be quiter and the
bars smaller, but many people consider these bars make a nice
change from the high-pressure commercial scene around Patpong
and Suriwong. Pride Festival 2006 - Bangkok Together will be
held 28 October - 5 November, 2006.

EMERGENCY
HELP
All travellers to the Kingdom of
Thailand should take out health & travel insurance
before starting their journey. Accidents are frequent on
Thai roads and though crime is not a huge problem in
Thailand, it still happens, so better safe than sorry!
There are many excellent hospitals and
clinics in Thailand where you will receive excellent
treatment BUT they will all present you with a bill for
the treatment. and In many cases they will want proof of
ability to pay or insurance before any major treatments
are performed.
There is an ambulance service but as
we know it in the western world. Most ambulances are privately
run or staffed by volunteers and as traffic in Thailand
is notoriously bad they may take a long time to reach
you. In the provinces and villages there may be no
ambulance service at all. |
THAI
POLICE
There are
many types of Police in Thailand. The best bet for the
traveller is the Thai Tourist police. Many regular
police do not speak English but the Tourist Police and
police volunteers usually have people who speak most
common tourists languages.
If you are
the victim of a crime or need police assistance be
prepared to have to go to a Thai police station to
report the crime. Unless it is a major crime or involves
death or Injury, often Thai police will not respond to a
scene. If they do for a theft for example it might take
several days for them to show up. We advise you to
report all crimes to the Thai police immediately at the
nearest station, Don`t be alarmed by the above, The Thai
police are pretty good at solving crimes, it just is a
different system to the western world. Always take
care of your personal belongings and use hotel/room
safes when available.

EMBASSIES
- CONSULATES
Don`t forget you have your
countries embassy & consulates to call on in an
emergency - keep their numbers handy at all times.
HELP
YOURSELF
Always wear
a helmet if you use motorcycle taxis or drive one
yourself. You will find in your time of need that
local Thais and bystanders will be very helpful to you
so don`t raise your voice if possible in any situation ,
this is offensive in thai culture and may lose you vital
support and assistance.
We recommend if you feel ill and need
urgent treatment to take a taxi or arrange transport
yourself to the nearest hospital to avoid delay and to
assure your condition is treated quickly .
Try make friends with the local stall
holders - security guards etc, they will prove valuable
allies in times of need. |

most of your questions. Most hospitals and clinics
, the tourism authority of Thailand and even the police
have websites in english where you can garner useful
information , phone numbers and addresses.

of the smile. While times may be stressful and difficult
it helps to do everything with a smile and a quiet
respectful tone of voice with thanks yous in appropriate
p[aces. you will find you get much more help and faster
resolution of your problems if you keep this in mind |

LGBT rights in Thailand
Homosexuality and cross-dressing are widely tolerated in Thailand.
Legal status
Sodomy was decriminalized in Thailand in 1956. In 2002, homosexuality was no longer considered to be a mental problem or disease in Thai law.
Gays and transsexuals have been allowed to join the armed forces since 2005. Prior to this, Thailand inducted all young men except gays and transsexuals, who have been barred from serving under the "mental disorder" exemption of 1954.
Protection based on sexual orientation in law
There are no laws against
gays or lesbians in Thailand. However, there are some Buddhist laws that prohibit openly gay men to enter monkhood. Transsexuals (known as Kathoey) are imbued in Thai culture via television, and cabaret shows, such as the Alcazar Theatre in Pattaya.
Recognition of same-sex couples
The news of Elton John's marriage brought about criticism from the Thai gay community towards the government, since same-sex marriages, civil unions or domestic partnerships are not officially recognized yet. Regardless, many Thai gay and lesbian couples are widely open in the public, especially in urban centres such as Bangkok, and westernized areas such as Phuket and Pattaya.
Gay life in the country
Thailand is said to have one of the most openly gay societies in the world, however 'coming out' in families is not common. The pressure to marry is much less than in Caucasian, Indian or Islamic societies.
Thailand has annual
gay pride events in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket. The health authorities work together with the gay community to promote HIV education and prevention. Gay and transvestite actors also play key roles in Thai movies and soap operas.
Between 2002 and 2007 many lesbian bars and clubs have opened in Bangkok, previously there were only lesbian parties or special events. The recent coup d'ètat has not affected the gay scene at all
